Pine Beach Trail from Little Lagoon beaches, |
![]() |
As you leave the southern lagoon shores, they show the bright white sandy shores this areas beaches are famous for. The trail rises quickly into the dunes and the Refuge has placed a bench looking north so that you can look over the lagoon at the natural pine forest on its north bank before continuing on the the winding trail between the dunes. The trail continues through patches of hardy grasses and small brush growing on the steep sides of impressive natural dunes. After passing sevearal waves of large dunes, you top the last set and see a series of lower dunes before the Gulf Beaches covered with sea oats. After these you will cross a wide strech of white sandy beach with lines of crushed sea shells before you reach the waters edge. The trail is an aproximately 1 1/4 mile hike to the middle of the west bank of the Lagoon and then another 1/2 mile through the dunes the edge of the Gulf. After relaxing on the beach, you can return the way you came or walk west along the beach until you reach the Mobile Street beach access and take it back to the driveway leading to the parking lot where you started. Going this route makes a slightly more than four mile loop. I recommend exiting the parking lot by the driveway to Mobile Street onto Fort Morgan Road, you have a better line of sight for traffic than the exiting directly to Fort Morgan Road. ...return or ...info or ...home. ... or check out this area in Bing (Microsoft) Map's Bird's Eye View. ...here. |
